A game is meant to be fun; stealing and griefing is simply bad form and brings everyone down.

Why are you interested in playing on a Vanilla SMP server?
It seems, well, safe in a way and I'd like to play a game with other people that not hell bent on playing with outlandish rules.

This will show my inner nerd.  I've made tunnels that would be hardy dwarves cry in shame and towers wizards dream about.  And I've been known to have some one's back.
