I might have found a potential solution to some of these problems.
We, as a communtiy, use the server, but go live off in some very distant corner in a self-built unofficial town. We set up our own guidelines, etc, and just skirt around stuff like Towney registration, by just living together.
If you do not inform us of your inactivity and are inactive for longer than a week, then your house in a city and your shop may be removed, without reimbursement when you return.
Solution: No shops in public places, no houses in cities.
Iconomy and Towny: We only use it to trade among ourselves, and live in an unregistered hermit community.
HOWEVER, Two more issues that discourage me all over again.
Can I build anywhere I want?
No. There’s some restrictions as to where you may build. You can’t build in spawn. Also, you can’t build in/really close to someone elses building, unless you get their permission. Do not make additions/fixes to others’s buildings. For the rest, just make sure that you build in the already explored area. This will prevent the map file from getting too big.
When the map size is limited, anywhere we build is at risk of being overrun by people. Given what I have read, admins might even move our town if someone wants to set up an official town there. Not in this quote is a 500 block "radius" around existing towns and spawn. Yay, even less room. So if someone sets up a town within 500 blocks, then notices we are within 500 blocks, Admins might prefer the town, because they are using credits, while we are "free"
Why is EE disabled?
It's overpowered. Deal with it.
Why can I not place down a Computer or Turtle?
Computer Craft is exclusive to donors currently, as malicious code can be written, which can crash the server. When people invest real currency, they are MUCH less likely to grief and abuse their tools.
I can't use the Mining Laser. Why?
The mining laser is disabled as it can be abused to break even locked chests.
Why can't I place/break my nuclear reactor?
This is to prevent possible grief by placing a reactor under someone's house and making it overheat on purpose. Please ask an admin to place/break one for you.
No EE, Computer craft, Mining laser, or nuclear reactors. I would like access to EE and Computercraft. Also, don't want to be admin-dependent to build reactors. Yes, their reasoning makes sense. Doesn't mean I have to like them.

Actually, the more and more I read, the more and more I would like a personal server run by someone, with only people who are trusted let on.
This also ensures no one will purposefully write malicious code.
I personally want my first (and probably only) Tekkit experience to be with people that I have come to know so we can have a fun experience together.
As for the server with all the mods, I used to play on a server like that. It was fun for a week, but then started to feel like George Orwell's 1984. I even got my xp farm destroyed
. And a limited map size results in major claustrophobia, which sucked
.
Anyway, we should get the full benefit of Tekkit without having to donate.

As in personal server run by one of us?
That is what I would view as the best option if we can get it running.
Trusted community, community built rules, minimized greifing.
Plus, any doucebaggery on there would result in a request for a ban on this server, because it shows what the player is likely to do.
Kaya has a server, but I don't know it's resources or whether kaya would be interested in playing/hosting.
I have a home server, but am not sure how to get it working. Summer project, maybe?

Yeah that's what I meant Kura. (That for some reasons sounds really sarcastic, but its not supposed to
)
The only bad thing about a server run by one of us is that it probably would not be 24/7.
However, that is so far the best option I see, for reasons that have already been stated

How much bandwidth would a server with 10 slots need? Enough to enjoy my Netflix and host at the same time? Or would there be a need for a dedicated link?

I agree with you guys that that server isnt ideal. One thing can do is search around some minecraft forums for people willing to host a server. I noticed a couple of people on reddit and there is sure to be some on the minecraft forums.

Be careful Addons = Maintenance if you want to host a server.

Well, I've been accepted on it, so I'm gonna check it out.

Equivalent exchange is a good concept,
but as it is made, is too powerful.
At mid-end game, it alows you to:
- make 3x3x64 holes with one clicks, items are dropped
- have gigantic bag space
- virtually invincible from mobs
- Item copy and item generating
The time it takes you to go to endgame is around 6-8 hours with this mod installed.
The fun part is learning the mechanism and the recipes, after, don't expect to mine at all.

It is an extremely powerful mod.
Inspired by one video I watched to get an Idea on how Tekkit works out, they had a Wizard/Scientist split. People who used only EE, and People who didn't use it at all. Made for interesting society, and "nerfed" some of the EE potential.
If the community is up for banning EE, I am fine. I at least want a say in it, rather than joining a server with preset rules.
I want to put trust into some person from reddit. I know people around here, I have more trust in their admining and decisions for the server. Gives us as a community more control.

kura did you by any chance watch LividCoffee from yogscastlalna ? They had the same idea there. Started to watch their tekkit series to learn some stuff :} . About EE . I think it is a bit over power but i dont agree about banning ee. The best solution from my point of view is to nerf EE so that it is farely balanced.

Sweet, you mean the TechCraft server right? Just for clarification.

I also think it would be cool, if we all were masters of different mods, (Like Duncun's Tekkit series
) like someone could be a EE Wizard, one could be a IndustrialCraft Scientist, A Master Foresty Mod person, and a railcraft person, also an BuildCraft engineer. I applied for a Tekkit server but they are raising funds for it, so far $450 out $500. It is called EldsCraft. Looks less offical than TechCraft.
Omg... just realized that everything ends in Craft... (i.e. BuildCraft, TechCraft, IndustrialCraft, EldsCraft, RailCraft)

So does pretty much every texture pack, mod and map for mineCRAFT. It's just like that. And yes, I meant tech world. And no, I didn't like it.

Yeah. Dunkin = Lividcoffee. Watched that to get an idea of SMP Tekkit, and liked the Wizard/Scientist split.
You can't nerf EE except by disabling certain crafting recipes. A great nerf would be that EMC conversion has a 5% loss or so. Slows it down immensely.
I would like to see how well it works if we remove the endgame EE stuff. Invincible, Flying, shooting balls of lava, setting fire to anything around you, etc. Rather absurd. (Thinking of gem armor and the rings, etc).
Stuff like covalence dust, alchemical chests, and other early-game EE stuff are very balanced.
The advantage of all the crazy EE stuff is that it gives a good reason to build and gather resources. It sets a very distant goals for player.
Ending something in Craft helps associate it with minecraft. Lets you put your mod name first (Ex: build), followed by the association. Makes it very easy (sometimes) for people to tell what Crafting the Mod adds. (Eg. Railcraft). Starting with mine doesn't work because not every mod mines. Nearly every one includes crafting, as a general rule. It also makes you use normal works into an original name (Eg. Buildcraft), rather than having to call it something more original.
