Alright, so I asked my dad, and we have enough spare parts to build a server. So hardware doesn't appear to be an issue.
A few questions, mostly targeted at SDM but answerable by anyone:
1. Software. How would one run a server? What OS and programs? Any conveniant tutorials for a dedicated home server?
2. ISP. My dad mentioned that AT&T might not like large amounts of traffic. How bad is typical traffic, and would an ISP care? I could always just lower player cap until it reaches a decent amount.

We might have our own server? YES. Thank you Kura. I thought everyone had forgotten

1. I recommend using your favorite Linux distro. I'd make sure you configure MySQL and vncserver so that you have access to a database for logging and can remotely monitor everything (you could just use ssh, but it is nice to have visual control if your distro has a GUI). There are lots of already written scripts out there for backups, et cetera. If you don't have at least 4 Gigabytes of RAM and a 7200 RPM HDD or an SSD, then gtfo.
2. I transfer quite a few gigabytes a month via upload (sometimes > 10 GB). It varies from ISP to ISP. They might just throttle your connection speed.

Anyone else think it's a little off to be here collaborating on making a new server? I dunno maybe sdm is cool with it but I wouldn't do it.

Yeah, I'm not a fan of the discussion, but if I lock this thread they will find another place to communicate.
And, if they did that, then they'd be entirely isolated from the community and eventually just leave the server.

It was a proposal for another community effort. If you dislike it that much, I will abandon it. I was just curious.

Its not like we're abandoning this server...Tekkit is just like a whole different game. I will continue to play on this server, though, as my only vanilla server. Maybe this topic should have been in the general forum...

I played on a tekkit server for a few days.....but the combination of terrible lag and not playing with my home-slices here turned me off to tekkit.

AKA the suggestion of a server run by one of us for our community. Hopefully more reliable, and we can still enjoy all the awesome people we know while trying out a new enviroment.

Yes , i like the idea .
The server must deffinetly have a logging plugin as well as a back up. Now if you setup the server i suggest you nerf down EE since its way overpower. About the isp , it depends on what provider you are using and what's the internet package you have . Just be sure to check whats your download/upload limit if you have one. Goodluck on setting it up

Hmm: THREAD REVIVAL.
Are we ever going to do something. It seems most everyone has forgotten about Tekkit, but I would still like to play
. BTW Shan, saw you apply for Panda's server
.
Anyway, just reminding people we should still get together and do something with Tekkit.
Side note to Kura: is your server still possible?

Should I just host a Tekkit server?
|
|
That'd be cool. And this way, we're not collaborating to make a different server!
|
|
that would be awesome if you hosted a tekkit server. the only problem i think is making sure its not laggy. tekkit is very lag prone lol. i think with a community like this lag shouldnt be a problem. also if you find out how much it costs monthly, i think i could offset some of the cost per month.

if you do host just make sure to heavily nerf down EE or else we will have problems + it also ruins the fun of mining and resource gathering.
