Throw some animated gifs into the portal.

at least 6 of them... that'll do

I don't...
Just use simple maths. If you don't know it, build portals at x,z in the nether, 8x, 8z in the overworld. And build at both sides.

Totally watching BSG while reading this.To get it to work, you have to build a portal in the nether at coordinates/8 corresponding to the main world portal. This could very well be in the middle of lava pool so you have to make it under the pool, above it, or make a platform outstretched and floating--height doesn't matter (only X & Y coords matter)
EDIT:Herpity Derpity Kura beat me to it

nah, the real problem your having is that your portal is too close to the spawn portal. needs to be over 1280 blocks away or it'll just send you to that one.... typically. Who knows... your probably too close to the openville one too, which brings up the other point... you're close enough to everything, just take the rail.

I don't think so.
Portal mechanics time! (From what I remember)
You are in overworld. You enter portal at X, Z. Game looks for the nearest portal around X/8, Z/8 in the nether within a 257x257x128 area. If there is none, it kinda guesses, and places one in the best looking spot.
You are in the nether. Similarly, You enter at X,Z. Game looks for nearest portal around 8Z, 8Z in the overworld within the same 257x257x128 area. Again, guesses.
If there are two portals for "nearest" (same x and z), I think it takes the top one. Or the bottom one. Either way, always the same.
Note how funky the scaling works with the 257x257 area.
Also lets you pull strange and neat tricks, where the two different sides of the 2x3 portal (left v right) can actually lead to different places.
The way to get an individual portal working correctly is to build by hand the portal on both sides.
So to get it working, I think you just need to go to the exact coordinates and build the reflection on the other side. That 99% works. Then again, I haven't been on. Its just my epic guess and deduction skills.
Also, watch out for the mosscow chaos arena portal I built. That one is rather close.

Kura is correct,
The way to get an individual portal working correctly is to build by hand the portal on both sides.

you don't HAVE to build the portal on both sides. just go to the exact coordinates and open excavate the area if its obstructed (usually in the nether).
For summary:
Check your coordinadinates where you want the portal in the otherworld.
For exemple X=-525 Y=58 Z= 1230
divide X and Z by 8 -> X= -65 Y=58 Z=153
Go to that place in the nether, make a platform at y=58, make sure there is enough space around it for a portal to spawn, make your pathway.
From this point you can either:
-Build the portal in the nether activate it (DON'T activate it) go the the otherworld build a 2nd portal and activate it.
OR
-Go to the portal and build only one portal and activate it (a 2nd portal will be created in the nether where you wanted)
Make sure your altitude is correct, there might be portals above or below you.
In general make sure there is no other portals in the ortherworld less than 32 blocks from yours, because in the nether /8 -> its less than 4 blocks from yours and it could end up in the 2 for 1 problem.
There's no need to build portals less than 100 blocs away anyway.

Really? I didn't know portals recognize unlit frames as valid portals. I though if you have an overworld portal at 0,0 it would send you to an existing nether portal at 100,100 even if the area around 0,0 was free.
I know that if there were no nearby portals, then it tends to choose the frames. But didn't know it would prefer an unlit frame that is closer over a lit portal slightly further. Huh.

Yes your right, checked it and seems logical, unlit portals are not part of the equation

wait.......so what do I do?
My brains like

Gif spamming us will eventually explode the Internet and set some fires...that fire will be placed on netherack and will turn into a portal block, sorted.

SDM, can you ban gifs from being uploaded?
So here is what you do. You have a portal at X, Z in the overworld. Go to X/8, Z/8 in the nether and build a portal there. Done.

I think that needs simplifying Kura. Also, if I hold the iPad screen gifs stop playing so I win.
