I'm halfway through a sand generator and was told to make a post about it on the forums to see if i can do this without issue. Only reason for now that im making a sand generator is to get use to the workings of it so i can adapt to making a sand spleef arena that regenerates with the press of a button.

Let me know

A sand generator?

Haha, gotcha. Looks cool, but idk if it would mess something up. hmm It may be frowned upon.

It's possible, but it can cause lag issues, you should probably check with the other redstone experts.

On the 1.7.3 map, I had started up the "Save the beaches" campaign via sand duplicator, which SDM approved of. Then I helped Hobo build one with about 64 pistons (This one was simply a piston lifting and letting go of a sand block quickly). You can even see it on the 1.7.3 map still.
So I think SDM is fine with it. Still wait for his approval.

So my general advice:
The game lags a lot less if the timings are offset.
Have it fire maybe 4 at a time, with 1 tick delay. Maybe even 2 at a time. Minimize the number of pistons firing simultaneously. The more the laggier.
You would be amazed on how much stuff like this helps.
(Simple test: 16 blocks with redstone on top, TNT on both sides, compared to pairs of two with 1 tick repeaters in between each pair. Suspended in the air so TNT doesn't break it).

How would you keep the sand from falling down the hole players fall down? Floor of signs?

thank you kura for the response i was doing something of a test on the scale of a spleef arena in total but condensed with it dropping the sand into a cactus dump(destroys dropped items) so that items do not build up if not picked and so that it wouldn't create a 10 block of sand to break afterwards just to see what affects the server feels from it so that it doesn't have drastic problems when the arena is reset when the majority of the blocks are gone.

Not item duping. Sand duping.

Speaking from 1.7.3 experience. Sand tends to be taken from beaches or from the removal of deserts (Plus, on the old map, there weren't any good deserts around). So sand was acceptable. But when the classic duper was around, SDM was very against it.

Diamond etc. duping is just degenerate.

Again, SDM has the final say, but avoid doing anything until you know it is legal.

Website

I have an idea. Wouldnt it be better to do a spleef arena out of snow ? We can easily harvest snow from snow golems and thus dont have to use a laggier option such as a sand duplicator. Another cool idea that may opt for the spleef arena is using cobble generators to  automatically refill the arena up. Tell me what you think big_smile

one the snow is a possible alternative. two a cobble arena needs eff 5 diamonds picks to play so its kind of an expensive arena equipment wise and also thieves are prevalent so who knows. only reason i ask is cause it would be a much more fun atmosphere after each game. As one you can just leave once done and not worry about replacing all the blocks you broke which who wants to when your ready to play again.

Imo this is more of sand farming than duping. bukkit may have fixed this though

Just checked bukkit forums. Nothing in the patch notes, and people have "piston safe" plugins that fix sand duping, which suggests it isn't a feature.

Suggestion: If it works in creative but not on the server, try hosting your own temp local server to test it.

Ok so I've done the build in a localhost smp server and have tweaked what i had originally so it could somewhat work. and by somewhat and by that i mean that one its bugged, and two i can't connect a lever or a switch without it bugging due to something in the lever or switch just pulsing at an alarming rate(counted it pulse 8-10 times). So i will suspend my build of this as it seems to be a server issue with buttons and switches. And i have thought you could make it work but even still there are times when its turned off that sand with bug and cause all sorts of problems. and btw the duped sand is perfect for an arena as one when broken by hand or tool nothing drops as far as ive tested. so no free sand from spleefing if it becomes somewhat possible.

Thank you everyone for your suggestions. I hope the server switch bugs get sorted out as this would be great to have to make a sand spleef arena.
